It’s Sunday and that means I have a sample review for you! Today I’ll be taking a closer look at the Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Gel Cleanser.* I bought this, maybe? I really have no clue how this got into my collection. I thought I saw it in the check-out aisle bins at Ulta. 😅
For those who don’t know, Honest Beauty is a part of The Honest Co., which is co-owned by Jessica Alba. Honest Beauty is a brand that’s all about eco-friendly, clean products that are cruelty-free as well. Getting into the details of the cleanser, Honest Beauty states that the Refreshingly Clean Gel Cleanser is made… “with a botanical blend of Chamomile, Calendula, Yucca Root extract and Saponaria, this luxurious formula delivers a fresh, foamy experience that removes dirt and makeup without over-drying skin.” Additionally, Honest Beauty did a study of 325 women who claimed that after four (4) weeks of use, “95% agreed skin felt refreshed and clean after use, 94% agreed skin showed no signs of makeup after use and 85% agreed skin did not feel dry after use.” On top of that, Dermstore also states the product is ideal for those with all skin types ranging from hypersensitive/sensitive to mature skin and everything in-between. And lastly, the product is also free of sulfates, parabens and synthetic fragrances and dyes.
So, is this amazing? Does it leave your skin feeling refreshingly clean as the product line indicates? Let’s first take a look at the ingredients and then talk about my experience with the product.
Below are the ingredients (as listed on CosDNA):
Water, Sodium Laurylglucosides Hydroxypropylsulfonate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Glycerin, Sorbitol, Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate, Calendula Officinalis (Marigold) Flower Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Saponaria Officinalis Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Lavandula Hybrida (Lavandin) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Abies Sibirica (Fir Needle) Oil, Cymbopogon Martini (Palma Rosa) Oil, Pelargonium Graevolens (Geranium) Oil, Pogostemon Cablin (Patchouli) Oil, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Oil, Lauryl Glucoside, Gluconolactone, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate
As you can see from the ingredients above, this does contain all the ingredients Honest Beauty totes about. Additionally, it does contain other essential oils, which I am surprised by. For something saying its for sensitive or hypersensitive skin, essential oils wouldn’t be on my list of things to put in. But, with that in mind, the product didn’t smell like anything, so perhaps its not that bad? Also, I didn’t have a reaction to it at all, so that may say something, too. Especially since I used this at the height of the worst part of allergy season. (PS, I was a mess during that time! 😥)
The gel is clear and slightly runny in texture. It bubbles slightly when wet (see below) and unless you have a ton in your hand, its hard to tell what’s water or what’s the cleanser upon application. While it didn’t dry me out, it also didn’t leave my skin feeling soft. My skin just felt “clean.”
The Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Gel Cleanser retails for $18 for 5oz of product, which in turn is about $3.60 per ounce. Compared to other gel cleansers that I’ve used/love (Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash $28/8oz, Tarte Deep Dive Gel Cleanser $25/5oz & Too Cool For School Sitkoza Cleansing Gel $20/5oz), this is slightly cheaper or on par. Performance wise, this is very comparable to the Too Cool For School gel cleanser and if you’re looking for a slightly cheaper product, this may be a good substitute.
So would I recommend the Honest Beauty Refreshingly Clean Gel Cleanser? I would if you’re looking for a basic, no-fluff gel cleanser. If you have oily, normal or combo skin, you’ll like how simple this cleanser is. I personally will be purchasing this for my tween daughter and teen son, that is if I can pry him off his holy grail cleanser. I just don’t recommend for those with sensitive or hypersensitive skin. I wouldn’t risk it due to the inclusion of those essential oils.
